Our Story
Redefining Healthcare, Empowering Futures
The Government of Meghalaya, Health & Family Welfare Department, is undertaking the establishment of Proposed Shillong Medical College (SMC) with the objective of strengthening medical education and enhancing healthcare services within the State.
1906-1945
Foundation and Early Governance
The idea arose in 1906... first patient on 16 January 1917. Originally named King Edward VII Memorial Pasteur Institute, it was led by Col. R. Knowles and overseen by the Assam Medical Research Society until 1945.
1917-2005
Vaccine Production & Diagnostic Services
Built on the Pasteurian model, Shillong produced Neural Anti-Rabies and other key vaccines, and served as a diagnostic and technician training hub until 2005.
1945-Today
Institutional Transition and Legacy
Governance passed from Assam to Meghalaya in 1972, and the campus is now being transformed into the Academic Block of Shillong Medical College, continuing its legacy in healthcare and education.
